2001–2014, with S. Ceri and D. Fensel.
My earliest research line, and the one the others grew out of. It covers the Web and Information Retrieval, Web Data, Semantic Search, Semantic Web Services and Games with a Purpose.
It spans the years at CEFRIEL, where I started and coordinated the Semantic Web Practice, and the first years at Politecnico di Milano. The through-line is making meaning machine-processable on a Web that was not designed for it — semantic search with Squiggle, semantic web services, and the teaching that became the Web Information Retrieval book. The line is closed: by 2014 my attention had moved to streams.

GLUE2: A Web Service Discovery Engine with Non-Functional Properties
Alessio Carenini, Dario Cerizza, Marco Comerio, Emanuele Della Valle, Flavio De Paoli, Andrea Maurino, Matteo Palmonari, Andrea Turati
ECOWS 2008, Sixth European Conference on Web Services, 12-14 November 2008, Dublin, Ireland, 2008Semantic discovery of Web services is general but often not flexible enough for specific domains. GLUE2 is a discovery engine with a flexible architecture whose components (functional matching, non-functional matching, data fetching, …) can be composed in different workflows as each domain requires.

Marco Brambilla, Stefano Ceri, Federico Michele Facca, Irene Celino, Dario Cerizza, Emanuele Della Valle
ACM Trans. Internet Techn., 2007A model-driven methodology to design and develop Semantic Web Service applications described with WSMO: business processes (BPMN) and Web engineering models (WebML) are transformed, step by step, from an abstract view of business needs into software components, making it more efficient to build service applications that span several enterprises. Related to the 2006 IBM Faculty Award.
